Global Wellbeing Indicators

Purpose

Designers and people in general are too attracted by ‘new’, but nothing ages more quickly than ‘newness’. All my objects reflect [a] marriage between past and present.

Nations all over the world are beginning to recognize that the key to sustainable economic progress is to improve the wellbeing of their citizens. The GWI has been created to help and strengthen this work. The purpose of the GWI is:

To support communities and nations in improving the wellbeing of their people.

We propose to achieve this purpose by:
  • Monitoring the wellbeing of citizens in 145 nations
  • Producing an annual Global Wellbeing Report
  • Working with organizations, governments and international agencies to develop measurement tools to improve personal wellbeing
Here are some current examples of what nations are doing to improve citizen wellbeing:
  • In May 2019, the New Zealand Government unveiled its first wellbeing budget
  • Iceland is prioritizing citizen wellbeing ahead of GDP by focusing on mental health, childcare and parental leave and green energy
  • The OECD is focusing on economic wellbeing and living conditions
  • The Wellbeing Economy Alliance takes a more holistic approach to wellbeing. In the City of Santa Monica, Civic Wellbeing Partners, a non-governmental organization, have created a Wellbeing Index to measure the City’s progress.
