The 2020 Global Wellbeing Report

World Analysis

There was a 4-point decrease in the global wellbeing score between 2019 and 2020. This decrease reflects a steady downward trend.

Main Areas of Increase and Decrease in Global Wellbeing 2016 – 2020.

Over the past five years there has been a significant decrease in the score for Environmental Protection. (from 69.43 to 48.24 – a drop of 21.19.)

Other areas that have contributed to a decrease in wellbeing include, the Level of Peace (a drop of -2.19), the Level of Press Freedom ( a drop of -2.18) and the Level of Democracy (a drop of -1.68.)

The main gains in Global Wellbeing over the past five years have been in Strength and Stability of the State (an increase of +2.60), Support for Business (an increase of +2.58), Social Progress (an increase of +1.38) and Personal Safety (an increase of +1.28).

Regional Analysis

The following graph shows the overall wellbeing scores for the World Bank regions between 2016 and 2020.

All regions witnessed a drop in wellbeing. The largest decreases occurred in the regions of North America and Latin America. The smallest decreases occurred in the regions of South Asia, and Europe and Central Asia.
